Course Title: Europe in Transition Credit Hours: 6 Dates of the Course: May 12 – May 29, 2007 Instructors: Dr. Debra Kerby, Dr. Jason Lin Course Description: Europe in Transition is an international study program combining field trips related to the economic changes of the European Union, as well as cultural and historical aspects. This year's program will take students to Brussels, Belgium; to Paris, France; and to Venice, Florence, Sorrento and Rome, Italy. Students focus on understanding sacred sites such as Delphi, Corinth, and Epidaurus within their archeological, economic, historical, military, and social context. For More Information, please contact Dr. Reschly or Dr. Rose Course Title: Nursing Experience in the Philippines and Transcultural Experience in the PhilippinesCredit Hours: 5 Dates of the Course: May 18- June 10, 2007 Instructors: Prof. Mariquit Hadwiger and Dr. Stephen Hadwiger Course Description: This Nursing Experience course will be conducted in the Philippines and will focus on the nursing practice, health care systems, and baccalaureate nursing education in the Philippines. The Transcultural Experience in the Philippines will also be conducted in the Philippines and will focus on cross-cultural differences between the students' culture and the Philippine culture. The specific context of culture will focus on communication patterns and health care systems in the Philippines. Students may participate without prior knowledge of Chinese. Language courses will be offered at all levels. The program will be taught by a Truman State faculty member and professors of Shanghai University. The students will take field trips, visit museums and historic sites in and near Shanghai. During the first week of the program students will visit the capital of China: Beijing. This includes a visit of the Forbidden City, the Summer Palace and the great Wall. For More Information, please contact Prof. Minn Course Title: Discover ChinaCredit Hours: 6 Dates of the Course: May 7-28, 2007 Instructors: Dr. Huping Ling Course Description: Discover China explores five thousand years of Chinese history through visiting important historical sites located in the ancient capital cities and cultural centers of Beijing, Xian, Chongqing, Shanghai, Suzhou, and Wuzhen, taking a cruise along the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River, and experiencing the modern rhythms of China. Students are expected to grasp the enduring Chinese history within its aesthetical, archeological, cultural, ecological, economic, historical, military, religious and social context. For More Information, please contact Dr. Ling Course Title: Summer Study Abroad in Chambéry, FranceCredit Hours: 6 Dates of the Course: June 2- July 4, 2007 Instructor: Dr. Tim Farley Course Description: This is a 5-week program at IFALPES (Institut Francais des Alpes), designed to advance the French-language abilities from elementary to high intermediate students; four weeks intensive French classes at IFALPES combined with additional instruction and excursions by accompanying faculty member. Family home stay is an important component of the program. Four day-long excursions in the Savoie/Dauphiné regions, and five days in Paris at the end of the program are included. Course Title: Costa Rica Summer ProgramCredit Hours: 12 Dates of the Course: May 19- July 22, 2007 Instructor: Prof. Vera Piper Course Description: This course offers students the opportunity to increase their proficiency in the Spanish language. At least one year of college level Spanish is required. Students live in a Spanish speaking country and society where they can learn about diverse aspects of the culture and at the same time develop their language skills. They also learn how the traditional Latin American culture and values are used in daily living through contact with people and institutions representing various segments of society. For More Information, please contact Professor Vera Piper Course Title: German Culture and Language in DüsseldorfCredit Hours: 3 Dates of the Course: July 30 - August 19, 2007 Instructor: Dr. Ernst Hintz Course Description: The course introduces beginners to German culture within an immersion program that develops the student's communicative skills in German by increasing his/her knowledge of the culture. The city of Düsseldorf, a university town as well as the communications hub of Germany provides a rich, cultural context for the course. For More Information, please contact Dr. Ernst Hintz Course Title: Summer Study Abroad in Salamanca, SpainCredit Hours: 12 Dates of the Course: May 9 - July 2, 2007 Instructor: Dr. Silvia Pites Course Description: This is a 12 credit Spanish language and culture program held at Academia Mester in Salamanca, Spain. In addition to daily class work students are immersed in the native culture by living with a host family, by taking part in the many group activities. In addition to the six weeks of instruction in Salamanca, the program includes ten days of instructional touring in Catalonia, Castile, and Andalusia, plus four local cultural visits and two all day weekend trips.
