Course Title:  Sweet Power: Sugar, Empires, and Slaves in the Caribbean

Credit Hours: 6

Dates of the Course: December 19, 2007 – January 9, 2008

Instructors: Dr. Steven Reschly

Course Description: Sweet Power is a three-week, six-credit, Study Abroad course.  The class will take place in Curaçao (Dutch slave trade), and Barbados (English sugar plantation system).  The Caribbean is an amalgam of five continents:  Africa, Europe, North America, South America, and Asia.  It is an archipelago of the world’s cultures, mixed and remixed by time, economics, and power.  Studying the historic and contemporary Caribbean is a route toward greater understanding of world history.

This winter break course is closed! 


Course Title:  Cairo Field Study

Credit Hours: 2

Dates of the Course: December 29, 2007 – January 9, 2008

Instructors: Dr. Sara Orel

Course Description: A field study of the city of Cairo, incorporating literary, historical, archaeological, and art historical examination of the city through readings, on-site visits, and student writing.
